Western Emerald

Ecuador, Pacific slope, 5,700 feet

August, 2006

Every square millimeter of the tiny male Western Emerald seems covered with iridescence. This individual was captured in flight with multip high-speed flash to freeze it's motion, The flash duration of a typical hotshoe flash set manually to 1/16 power is about 1/10,000 second, sufficient to freeze these flying jewels.
Canon EOS 1D Mark II raw capture
