Gorgeted Woodstar

Ecuador, Amazon basin, 7,000 feet

August, 2006

This Gorgeted Woodstar is at a small feeder, so you can get an idea of how tinhy it is. The world's smallest bird is "officially" the Bee Hummingbird of Cuba and the Caribbean but this Woodstar is virtually as small. According to "The Birds of Ecuador," the Gorgeted Woodstar averages 2-1/4 in. from the tip of its tail to the end of its bill -- and that's when it's stretched out. They appear like large bumblebees, hovering gently and flying deliberately.
