Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) from Walker Pass in the Southern Sierra Nevada mountains (elev. 5,200'). Photographed 1 hr 20 min after sunset, it was easy to see with the naked eye.
The comet approached the Sun to 36 million miles (0.39 AU) on Sept. 27 and came as close as 44 million miles (0.47 AU) to Earth on Oct. 12; at the time of this photo, it was almost as close. It is moving away from the Earth and Sun and its brightness will gradually fade. If it returns, it will be in over 80 million years.
Light on the landscape is from the Moon (84% illuminated). Several satellite trails are visible.
