Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) over Mt. Whitney and the Eastern Sierra Nevada.
This shot was 9 minutes before moonrise and so the Milky Way was briefly visible. Later, it was completely washed out by moonlight.
The large fang-like rock in the foreground is known as the Shark's Fin, a popular rock climbing spot in the Alabama Hills. It is about 60 feet tall but is close by and appears higher due to foreshortening.
Distant Mt. Whitney is the last prominence visible at the far right; it is the highest point in the United States outside Alaska at 14,505'. Finally, Lone Pine Peak (12,949') is the prominent peak (right of center) that dominates the skyline from the Alabama Hills. It appears taller because it is much closer then Whitney.
A number of satellite trails are visible.
