The images are shown relative to the Earth's dark shadow, or umbra, which is outlined here by a circle. When the moon enters the umbra, it begins to go dark. When it has moved completely into the umbra, totality has started, and the moon turns a blood red.
In this image the moon moves from right to left as it is seen to move East against the background stars.
